What is Domain Alias in Google Apps & How to Use it for Saving Money?

There is no doubt that having a professional email address like [email protected] is a necessary thing & if you don’t have it until now, you are missing out a lot.

Let me tell you; your domain email address creates a lot of impressions & if you use a generic email address to send or receive email, you may not be taken seriously until you are already super popular. Today, I will talk about Google Apps domain alias feature which will help you to save a lot of money for your team or in your organization where you have multiple domains.

What is Domain Alias & How it works?

One common mistake a lot of webmasters make regarding using domain email address is, they sign up for a new account for all their domain to get the professional email address & pay separately per user per year.

This is the most common practice among new entrepreneurs & webmasters as even though domain alias being an old technique is not well-known to many.

If you have multiple domains with the similar organization structure, by not using domain alias feature, you are:

• Paying extra for each domain email address.
• Making it hard to maintain so many email address
• Extra work to maintain domain Google Apps administrator account

Let me quickly explain domain alias feature so that you would know how it will save your domain email address management headache.

Let’s say you have a domain name Work.com & you have setup Google apps to manage your domain email address. You have created following two domain email address:

After a while, your business started growing & you added a new domain name call alias.com. Instead of buying another account from Google Apps or any other service, appsYou login to work.com GooApps dashboard & add alias.com as a domain alias.

By doing this, what you are achieving is:

Any email which is coming to [email protected] will automatically be directed to [email protected] In short, you are giving users multiple email identities at domains other than the primary domain.

This is handy when you have multiple domains & you want to have all of them their branding. This is how I use it here on ShoutMeLoud.

So, I have email address as [email protected], [email protected] & [email protected]

Whenever I start a new blog, let’s say: shoutmetech.com

I add it as a domain alias & instantly I have domain email address as

[email protected], [email protected] & [email protected]

With just 5 minutes of work.

Benefits of domain alias feature:

• You don’t have to manage a separate email address
• You don’t have to create new email addresses. All existing domain email address will have the same email addresses on new domain alias.

To add a new domain as a domain alias in Google Apps, you need to login to your Google Apps admin dashboard.

Click on domains & the next page click on Add/remove domain alias:

This is where everything starts as you need to do following things:

• Add a new domain as a domain alias
• Verify domain ownership
• Setup MX record
