2016 is the year for mobile sites and mobile apps. Earlier, you must have focused on speeding up your website and implementing a responsive design, this year your focus should be optimising your mobile site for speed and performance. In my earlier post I have shared how you can check the website loading time and in this article, I will share how you can test the loading time for your mobile site. After the test, make sure you pinpoint the reasons which are slowing down your mobile site.

If you are wondering why you need to focus on the mobile site, here is my take on the same. From past one year, my reading shifted to mobile phones and action happens on my laptop. At times, my mobile is using Wi-fi connection and many times it uses the 3G connection to browse the inteet. Many times I have closed the webpage because it takes a lot of time to load. Unlike desktop where we multi-task (Multiple tabs opened at a single time), on mobile phones, we are usually doing one action at a time. So, it is becoming essential for you to have your mobile site well optimised for loading and performance.
Here I’m sharing few websites which will check the loading time of your mobile site. This is a good starting point for you to see how your mobile site is performing. Along with this, you should also check your Google analytics report to see how much time and what’s the bounce rate of mobile readers. First, let’s have a look at the sites which offer mobile website loading time.
2 Sites to Test Mobile Website Performance & Loading Time
GTMetrix:

GTmetrix offers testing mobile site loading on Android device. To try out this, you need to create a free account on their site and from the dashboard you can select the “Chrome, Android, Galaxy Nexus” and test your loading time. Right now, this feature is in beta test and it checks only for Android devices. Still a good starting point for you to test the performance of your mobile site.
If you don’t have a responsive or mobile design at this moment, you should atlas check the loading time of your website in slow speed (3G or 2G speed). When I checked my desktop site on 3G, it took almost 14 seconds to load.

Google page speed insights:

This is an official tool by Google and it doesn’t test the loading time of your mobile site, rather it is a performance testing tool. Using Google page speed insight, you will get the suggestion to improve your mobile website. It will show suggestion which is critical, need attention and things which are perfect. I realised few issues with my mobile site after using this too. You should run a test for your website and see how is the performance. This tool is mostly targeted to developers, and if you hire someone to develop your website, you can test your site performance here, and ask your developer to fix all the issues discovered by this tool.

At this time, I could find only these two sites which let you test mobile site loading time and performance. I’m hoping in coming days we will see a rise in more similar tool targeted for the mobile website. For now, go ahead and test your mobile site and share your results with me via comment.
